New Delhi: In one of the biggest philanthropic initiatives, HCL founder Shiv Nadar on Thursday donated over $129 million he earned by selling his 2.5 percent stake in the company owned by him and his family.
The amount was raised through the sale of a stake of about 2.5 percent in software firm HCL Technologies in block deals through HCL Corporation and will be used for education initiatives of the Shiv Nadar Foundation.

The amount donated by Nadar is by far bigger than the standards set by larger firms. Charitable giving in India probably totaled about $7.5 billion (Rs. 3,487.12 crore at an exchange rate of Rs. 46.49 per dollar) in 2009, according to a study by Bain & Co.
Earlier this year, IT services firm Tech Mahindra Managing Director Vineet Nayyar donated a third of his shares in the company, worth over Rs. 30 crore, to a Delhi-based charitable organisation run by his wife.
Software czar Azim Premji has also set up his own charitable foundation, which works in the area of elementary education.
One of the godfathers of the Indian IT industry, Narayana Murthy of Infosys, also pours millions into charitable causes.
And its not only the IT czars, but their wives who are also dedicated to the cause. Sudha Murty, the wife of Murthy, has also been contributing to the society very actively through the Infosys Foundation.
The Forbes' list of Asia Pacific's most generous business personalities this year included Kiran Nadar, Shiv Nadar's wife, and Rohini Nilekani, the wife of IT major Infosys' co-founder Nandan Nilekani.
Rohini has donated USD 40 million over the years to support causes such as education, microfinance, health care and environment.

1: These big fellas are donating to themselves
so they can save on taxes. It is a scam.
Either they are transferring the funds to their own account or their wives'account. It is a publicity gimmick.

3: Nadar is simply great. I was one of the
beneficieries as my daughter, who studied in
SSN, every year used to get almost the full
money paid as tution fees etc back intact as
scolarship: And she stood first in her
college, and also secured an university rank.
Being from a forward community, I doubt
whether she would have got such an
encouragement anywhere else! We need many
more Nadars!

8: It is interesting to see so much diversity
our people.
I read about corrupt politicians and govt. officials earning money at our country's and our development stake.
Then I also read about the people who think about less fortunate people and donate for cause.
I think people like Shiv Nadar should govern our country than the corrupt politicians available every were in our country like street dogs.

10: I would like to thank Mr. Shiv Nadar for such
a noble work. Because of the people like Mr
Nadar, India will go to the number one spot
in education very soon. Thanks again. Another
thing is that the contribution should be
utilized properly, I mean the intended people
should be benefited with the facilities.

11: Alas... they don't pay to their own
employees... Mind you all, charity begins at
home. Start paying at the market level
atleast, to your own employees.

13: Great to know about philanthropic initiatives
of our people. How is the money spent? Is it
by way of scholarships, opening
schools/colleges or giving cash to the needy?
If the money does reach the targeted group,
then only we will be able to see tangible
benefits.
