An IITian lights 10,000 homes in rural Bihar
| |
Bangalore: Taking innovation to the new level, Gyanesh Pandey, CEO and Co-founder of Husk Power Systems and Manoj Sinha, a Darden University alumnus are lighting up over 10,000 homes and small shops across villages in Bihar, reported Archana Rai and Pankaj Mishra of Economic Times.
Husk Power owns and operates miniature power plants generating between 35 kw and 100 kw of electricity from paddy husk that it supplies to consumers in off-grid villages. The startup plans to raise a fresh round of venture capital this month to scale up operations to more than 60 villages and to set up 50 plants to generate electricity from the current level of 22 plants by May 2010. "We have an open-source model of operations and can very quickly replicate across multiple locations," says Pandey, an electrical engineer from IIT Varanasi, who envisages Husk Power Systems rolling out services akin to a cell phone company.

In the last few years, India emerged as a laboratory for innovations in the alternative energy space with entrepreneurs and investors looking to build innovative solutions to address a power-starved economy. The is happening at a time when other countries are losing their luster in clean tech. North America's share of clean technology venture capital was down from 72 percent in 2008 to 62 percent in 2009, a four-year low.
It is the opportunity in bio-mass-generated electricity that Husk Power Systems is chasing, with plans now to replicate its model in Bihar in other states such as West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. "Our model works around involving local teams. There is no magic wand that we use, we just keep technology simple, generate power and feed it to consumers who have no access to state-grid power," says Pandey. Currently, Husk Power offers electricity at Rs.80 for 30 watts and Rs.40 for every incremental 15 watts. This allows rural homes to get about 6-7 hours of electricity.
"The idea is to have a 40 kw plant that services perhaps four villages," Pandey, who feels the price point makes it possible for consumers, who depend on kerosene lamps or diesel generated power, to switch easily to this cleaner source.

1: This is indeed a great work done by Mr.Pandey
& Singha. In fact I would like to
replicate in a hamlet situated at a dist of
approx.320 km from Kolkata in Jharkhand, the
place is almost equidistant from
Dhanbad/Giridih. Incidentally I have also
studied from BHU. We have significant land
holding at the place, which is surrounded by
villages habitating adivasis,Telis,kumhars
etc which are devoid of electricity. They are
mostly kerosene dependent. Other projects
such as goatery,piggery,fishery,tourism
etc.can be started. Should the proposal seem
to be acceptible kindly contact me at e-mail
or mob.9432020423-Mukherjee.ONGC,Kolkata.

3: wwowow great idea which is quite
convenient.Besides solar powered energy this
is quite a natural way of producing
electricity.Our government cannot initiate to
develop alternate sources of power
consumption rather than fighting cases for
mullaperiyar dam and other issues. This is
really a welcome step and wish the 2010 will
be the year of more lights in to the lives of
the unprivileged.

5: It's heartening to see these kind of news, as
it symbolises our endeavour towards better
future with these kind of disruptive
innovations. Although, the concept is not
new, as we used to have such power generation
systems in our villages, but it was not
implemented and executed in organized manner.
It's a welcome step from these two persons
and they deserve applause from all of
us...Also, we should not stop here, as it's
the time to grow with new Entrepreneurs in
several fields to transform INDIA again as
"VISHWA GURU".

16: when we talk of lighting up homes, change the
thought form cinventional bulbs to LED
lighting. the cost is high initially, but the
benefits are many.
A 100W conventional incandescent light is replaced by about 10W in LED, and the life of the buld is over 30 yeares.
There is no disposal issue as in CFL which has highly toxic ingredients.
Think about the economics along with all issues.

as written by Silicon India. These kind of
POwer generating plant is available in
Punjab, And quite old. These is not new
concept. But I really appreciate the Work
done by Mr. Gyanesh Pandey and Mr. Manoj
Sinha. They are truely deserve the
recognition for the work they have done for
Villagers of Bihar.

19:yes we have had a gobar gas plant in Mandar
Hill [Bounsi] Bihar for over 30-40 years now
-- two lights, one fan. Cost Rs 2000
thirty-forty years ago. The solar panels
should also work well in Bihar -- used them
in the Asiad in the Asian Village -- there
was enough hot water etc for 8 people.

Can we also get more details so that we try
see whether we can reduce any heat/carbon
etc..and use CFLs to provide electricity to
few villages adopted in Karnataka &
Tamilnadu to start with

26: Better start then never, a good initiative
can revolutionize the power distribution
system, basic advantage of this can be purely
electricity, but big electrical engineers
need to learn its by product that is "Save
Electricity through evading Grid Loss of
large transmission links" Great Idea Gyanesh

27: The initiative is very interesting, though
similar efforts are there in other parts of
the world and in India. I am surprised at the
cost of Rs. 56,000 for a 20 kVA "husk power"
plant. It appears too cheap. Could you
explain briefly, the technology route used?
Use of bulbs should be discuraged, and at any
rate 100 W bulbs.
